Kids love gifts but it’s not always easy to choose a present for a child you don’t know very well. In Canada, the best answer to your dilemma is a custom gift card that allows the child to pick out exactly what they want.
Children, however, may not find a small envelope containing a custom gift card as exciting as a big wrapped box. But you can add the “wow” factor to your gift card by being creative with wrapping and presentation.
Freeze it
Find a gift card size freezer mold or plastic container and freeze the card inside it. Keep it frozen until it is time to hand over gifts. If you know the kid is going to open the gift as soon as you arrive you can place it in a cooler and place the cooler in a gift bag shaped like an iceberg.
Put it in a cookie jar
Take a glass jar and fill it with homemade or store-bought cookies, hiding the gift card in amongst the cookies. Then simply decorated the jar with a ribbon and a label that says “hands off my cookie jar” or “property of” and insert the child’s name.
Disguise the size
Instead of placing the gift card in an envelope, place it in a shoebox with a few packets of sweets, and some bubble wrap or packing peanuts, and wrap it like a conventional gift. Or you can put it in a few boxes that get bigger and bigger, wrapping each box before placing it in the next box. Alternatively, you can place it in the middle of a set of Russian nesting dolls.
Puzzle it out
Place the custom gift card in a specially designed gift card maze or a magic box that you can buy online and watch as the kid enjoys solving the maze or figuring out how to open the magic box to access their gift.
Hang it on the Christmas tree
If you are giving gift cards to numerous family members and friends for Christmas, you can buy a selection of small gift boxes, place the cards inside, and hang them on the Christmas tree like decorations.
Frame it
This is the perfect idea for a kid who loves pictures and photographs. Framing the custom gift card is a simple presentation trick that is, in fact, two gifts in one.
Let it snow
No kid can resist a snow globe to make one to hold their gift card. Place the gift card in a mason jar and fill it with glitter and water, and just like that, you have a snow globe gift card holder.
Movie night
All kids love the movies so give your gift card wrapping a movie theme. Placing their plastic gift card in a popcorn tub with some movie theatre candy will delight any kid.
Interactive wrapping paper
Place the custom gift card in a shoebox, cover the box in brown paper, stick on a few strips of black paper, draw while lines down the center of the black strips to make them look like roads and lastly attach a couple of cars onto the road.
Shake it up
All you need for this is an old box, a plain piece of wrapping paper, some different colour scraps of paper and a piece of clear cellophane. Place the gift card in the box, wrap the box with the plain paper, next cover the gift with cellophane but leave one end open. Use you hole-punch to make some colourful confetti out of your colour scraps. Lastly, pour your confetti mix into the open end of your cellophane wrapped gift, seal it and you’re done.
Gift cards may at first seem like a lazy gift idea but who doesn’t want the chance to pick out their own present or see a show without paying out of pocket? This option is becoming very popular and with a little time and creativity, there are many ways for you to make a simple custom gift card look great. All you need to do is let your imagination run wild.
